Evil Eye

The evil eye belief is that a person, otherwise not evil in any way, can harm you, your children, your house, your health and so on by looking at you with envy and/or praising you. The evil eye or Nazar can be done out of love and unintentionally so it does not always have "evil" intentions attached to it. . The cultures that believe in this superstition all blame the eye as the source of this kind of "evil." Most researchers in this field believe that the eye was chosen because of its intrusive nature. It is said to be the windows to the soul so not only is the act of seeing an intrusion by itself but also the eye itself becomes a way to look into a person.

Belief in the evil eye — that a human being can cause injury or death through a malevolent glance or stare. Very often, the harm inflicted by the evil eye was linked to the envy of the person doing the harming, and the possession of an evil eye was often thought to reside in persons who displayed more general anti-social tendencies, such as meanness, selfishness, and envy.

The “evil eye” is another common superstition. It is commonly believed that all kinds of illnesses, pains, epileptic fits and handicaps can be caused by an evil eye which explains mothers making a black mark on the forehead of the child before taking him out of the house. Black mud pots with fierce faces drawn on them are also hung on the door of a new house , the purpose is protecting the house from “ the evil eye.”

According to a tradition, the Prophet permitted the use of talismans as protection against the evil eye. It is tradition among many Muslims, that if a compliment is to be made, you are always supposed to say "Masha'Allah" (ما شاء الله) ("What God wills") to ward off the evil eye. The reference of the Evil eye is mentioned in the Sunnah. Also  (لا قوة إلا بالله) ("There is no power other than with God"). It is a testimony from someone that he/she believes that either good or bad will only happen if God wants it to.

"Chashmi bad dur" ("May the evil eye be far") also used in Urdu.  In addition to saying "Mashallah," there are duas (prayers or supplications) that are said to protect against the evil eye. In Islam, God is the only one who can protect against the evil eye.

The evil eye is the name for a sickness or misfortune transmitted, usually with or without intention, by someone who is envious, jealous, and covetous or even a pious person from among man or jinn. it could affect children, adults, livestock, and any kind of materialistic items, and the most vulnerable are the very young, the wealthy and the beautiful.

Jealousy is more general then the evil eye. A person with an evil is a specifically jealous person therefore, every person with an evil eye is a jealous person, but not every jealous person is a person with an evil eye.  Jealousy is caused by resentment, hatred and the desire to see a person stopped of his blessing. The evil eye, on the other hand is caused by admiration and approval.

Jealousy and evil eye share the concept of influence: both of them can affect a target However, they differ in their source: whilst jealousy stems from the heart burning desire to see the targeted person have a lot of business, then see him deprived; the evil eye, on the other hand emanates from the gaze of the eye therefore, a person with an evil may affect a target from which he is not jealous; inanimate things, animals, crops or money. He may even affect himself with his own evil eye. This is a stare of amiration, followed by a certain disposition that affects the targeted person.

A person may be jealous of something predictable, whilst a person with an evil eye may only effect what is actually present Man does not get jealous of his own-self or his wealth, but he may effect these with his evil eye. Jealousy only comes from an evil, resentful soul; but evil eye may come from a righteous person who admires something without having the desire to see it taken away.

Introduction of Evil Eye

The evil eye is the name for a sickness or misfortune transmitted, usually with or without intention, by someone who is envious, jealous, and covetous or even a pious person from among man or jinn. MashAllah, it could affect children, adults, livestock, and any kind of materialistic items, and the most vulnerable are the very young, the wealthy and the beautiful. To cast out an evil eye its not necessary to see the victim, the evil-eye can be transmitted even just by visualizing or imagining or even with a very limited description of the target person for example a person can cast-out an evil eye even on himself just by imagining or while look at himself in the mirror or even a blind person can cast out an evil eye just by visualizing the target person or a mother could herself un- intentionally cast out a evil eye on her child..etc.

Our Prophet[SAW] has therefore advised us to recite ‘MashaAllah’, to prevent the casting-out an evil eye, therefore one should say ‘MashaAllah’ when praising or looking at anyone or any thing with excitement, in-order to avoid casting an evil eye to them.

Evil Eye in Quran and Hadith

Quran“..And from the evil of the envier when he envieth.”[Quran Surah Al Falaq 113]

[QURAN SURAH AL FALAQ 113]
Hadith

Prophet(SA) said: “The evil eye is real, and if anything were to overtake the divine decree (al-qadar) it would be the evil eye.” [Muslim]

Symptoms of Evil Eye

Primary symptoms of evil eye are feelings of physical and/or emotional tiredness, unexplained bad luck or un-favorable incidences and illness. It is thought to cause drowsiness, drooping eyelids, listlessness, fatigue, weariness, lack of concentration, restlessness, discomfort, cramps, convulsions, headaches, hiccoughs, clumsiness, stomachaches, dry coughs, diarrhea, itching, hair loss, dry skin vomiting, the drying up of the milk of nursing mothers and livestock, problems with the blood and eyesight, impairment of sexual activity, impotence, sterility, disorders in menstruation, problems in pregnancy and childbirth, deficient breast milk, mastitis, and among babies and young children, incessant crying and fretting, a baby’s refusal to suckle or drink milk and other symptoms include lack of rain, the drying up of wells, the withering of fruit, sudden loss to business, and so on.

Treatment of Evil eye with Zikr and Dua

In the previous article we learned the how to cure a person with the method of washing. However, If the person who has put the evil eye is not known, then one can ask Allah to cure him by reciting some verses of the Quran and do as prescribed in the Shary’ah. It will by Allah’s leave cure the affected person, as always have been.

The affected person should hold his hands up together and recite into them Al-Faatihah (1st Surah of Quran), Ayat-ul-Kursi (verse 255 of Surah Baqara 2nd Surah) and Al-Mu-awizaat (Last two Surahs of Quran), then blow into his hands and wipe them all over his body.

The sick person may also recite the Verses over Olive oil and smear it on the site affected with evil eye; he may also recite the above verses over water and wash himself with it; he may even drink from that water.

If the sick person is able to recite prayers for refuge, he may recite the prayers bellow. All narrated from Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

* “A’oodhu bi kalimaat-illaah il-taammati min sharri ma khalaq”
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of that which He has created.
* “A’oodhu bi kalimaat Allaah Al-taammah min kulli shaytaanin wa haammah wa min kulli ‘aynin laammah”
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye.
* “Allahumma rabba annasi, azhibi ai-ba’sa washfi anta shaff, ia shifa’a iiia shifa’uka, shifa’an ia yughadiru saqaman.”
O Allah, the Lord of people, drive away the pain, and heal me, for You are the Healer, there is no cure except Your Cure; a cure that does not leave any illness, but that it cures it.

If the sick person cannot move and is unable to recite the above prayers, then a 3rd person can help him through the following:

* Put your hand on the patient’s forehead and recite the chapters:
Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas (Last three Surahs of Quran)

* Put your hand on the patient’s forehead and say:
“Bismiiiahi yubrika min kulli daa’in yushfika wa min sharre haasidin iza hasada wa min shrri kull zee ‘an”

In the name of Allah, He will heal you, from any illness He will cure you, from the evil of the jealous when he gets jealous, and from the evil of a person with an evil eye.

4- Recite the following dua'a to remain safe from the evil eye, shaytan, genie, and wicked person.

I bear witness that, verily, Allah, has power over all things: and, verily, Allah encompasses every thing in (His) knowledge, O my Allah, I seek refuge with You from the evil inside me and from the evil of every creature whom You seizes with its forelock. Verily my lord is on the right path]

In the pre-Islamic days of ignorance, when the pagans amongst the Arabs feared the effects of an ‘evil-eye’, in their ignorance, they would perform many a rite and ritual to ward off its evil….like wear amulets, tie their beards, or wear a string around their neck, or cleanse themselves with animal dung or bones, etc.  The Messenger of Allah (saws) absolutely and totally forbade the believers to perform such useless and unlawful acts to ward of the evil….and commanded the believers to simply recite the ‘Muawwidaat’ (113th Surah Al-Falaq and the 114th Surah An-Naas), for that would more than suffice the believers.

The Prophet (saws) used to seek protection against the Jinn and the evil eye till Surahs al-Falaq and an-Nas (113th and 114th Surahs of the Quran) were revealed. After they were revealed he (saws) stuck to them and discarded everything beside them.

Thus all one needs to do when one fears the influence of the ‘evil eye’ is seek the protection and refuge in Allah Subhanah Alone by being constant in one’s recitation of the 113th and the 114th Surahs of the Holy Quran.  It is expected that the Merciful Lord would protect him from all evil.

If one does any of the self-invented and useless rituals like revolving money around one’s head seven times, or burn something, or revolve something, or burn chilies, or perform any other rite or ritual in their effort to ward off the effects of the ‘evil-eye’, then they would be held guilty in the Court of Allah Subhanah for following an innovation (bida) in the least, or following a rite of the pagans and committing an act of ‘shirk’ at it worst!

If one fears the evil effects of the ‘evil-eyes’, all of is guided to do is recite the ‘Muawidaat’ (113th Surah Al-Falaq and the 114th Surah An-Naas), for the seeking of protection in Allah Subhanah is more than sufficient to ward off any and all evil.

As beneficial and as meritorious as the recitation of any of the Surahs of the Glorious Quran may be, there is absolutely nothing in the authentic and established Sunnah whereby the Messenger of Allah (saws) prescribed the recitation of the Surah Al-Burooj to ward off the evil eye.  To recite the Surah Burooj (or any other Surahs except Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Naas) with the intention to ward of the evil-eye would be against the Sunnah and Guidance of the Messenger of Allah (saws).

If one trusts, obeys, and follows the guidance and commands of Allah and His Messenger (saws),   one can be assured of never ever being misled;   but if one believes, obeys and follows any other guidance, other than that of Allah and His Messenger (saws), one can be assured of being led astray.

What do Muslims believe about God, prophets, the afterlife, etc?

The basic beliefs of Muslims fall into six main categories, which are known as the “Articles of Faith”:

Faith in the unity of God

Faith in angels
Faith in prophets
Faith in books of revelation including (Bible)
Faith in an afterlife
Faith in destiny/divine decree
The five pillars of Islam

In Islam, faith and good works go hand-in-hand. A mere verbal declaration of faith is not enough, for belief in Allah makes obedience to Him a duty.

The Muslim concept of worship is very broad. Muslims consider everything they do in life to be an act of worship, if it is done according to Allah’s guidance. There are also five formal acts of worship which help strengthen a Muslim’s faith and obedience. They are often called the “Five Pillars of Islam.”

Testimony of faith (Shahaadah or Kalima)

Prayer (Salat)

Almsgiving (Zakat)
Fasting (Sawm)
Pilgrimage (Hajj)
Daily life as a Muslim
Daily life as a Muslim:

While often seen as a radical or extreme religion, Muslims consider Islam to be the middle road. Muslims do not live life with complete disregard for God or religious matters, but nor do they neglect the world to devote themselves solely to worship and prayer. Muslims strike a balance by fulfilling the obligations of and enjoying this life, while always mindful of their duties to Allah and to others.

Morals and manners

Business ethics
Modesty in dress and behavior
Dietary rules
Marriage
Care of children and elderly
Racism and prejudice
Relations with non-Muslims

Evil Eye Protection:

More dangerous, subtle and common. Characterized by loss of energy, headaches, body aches, irritation, depression, lack of desire towards Salah and a serious hair loss amongst women etc.
